While I was walking down to the nearby metro station (not the one I live near to, but another one, that is about half an hour walk from my place) with a friend and beer, I saw thousands and thousands of crows flying owerhead in one spiffy looking black river, that was moving overhead while we walked. It lasted for more then ten minutes, sporting more then several thousand (with close aproximation), perhaps ten to twenty or thirty thousand crows flying above part of bird 'train' headed to the geology institute when they usually camp before moving south. It looked quite grotesque, perhaps an apropriate sight for some kind of fantasy-ish blockbuster of some kind (I don't watch those regularly, so I can't say)...

Haha. You are online? For some reason (I am not sure. I might blame it for being slightly drunk, and seeing all those cool crow flying overhead thing, I read all the recent stuff by you and commented where I could. I am not reading LJ as fully now that I don't work 5 days a week, so I could have missed something. By the way, great poem. Touched my heart. Soft be the earth to the Greywolf).

I'm online, but I'm at work.

For some reason what? I don't think I'm reading that sentence now.

And thanks for the kind words about Greywolf. That poem was read by his sister at his funeral.

Well, Im not sure, I am not sure, Im home after drinking some beer in the evening with an ex-classmate, so it might be little hard to undestand me now. :)

As for 'let the earth be soft for ' its the russian saying for someone who died, yet who the sayer somehow (even superficiously, ehh, Im not sure if its the right word) cared about. Literaly this phrase means 'let the earth be down for '.
Touch of Greytouchofgrey on October 15th, 2004 07:39 am (UTC)
I got the saying. It was nice, thanks. :-)

The part I was confused about was the, "For some reason (I am not sure..." part. I was wondering if something was supposed to come after "For some reason" besides what was in the parenthesis.
Стихийный Эйсид и Пиченька Судьбыxnrrn on October 15th, 2004 12:13 pm (UTC)
Hehe, I am not sure what was supposed to come after that. I have a short attention span. Especialy when dru... Ooooh! Shiny!

A murder of crows. :)
Стихийный Эйсид и Пиченька Судьбы: Gargoylexnrrn on October 14th, 2004 12:47 pm (UTC)
Murder of crows? As in many many, or something? I can't understand what you mean.

In russian it would be darkness of crows, or dark of crows. (Its from mongolean. Where thousand was called 'dark/darkness'. Something really great in number uncountable is called dark of darknesses, or somesuch, meanting thousand of thousands. :)
Theneathenemiranda on October 14th, 2004 01:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's the collective noun in English. No idea why it's that, but I likes it.
Стихийный Эйсид и Пиченька Судьбыxnrrn on October 14th, 2004 01:11 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I guessed so. We have dark/darks/darknesses meaning the same. :)
Hmm. Cool I didn't know that. :)
Intense Mediocritymenime on October 14th, 2004 12:37 pm (UTC)
That's awesome, I wonder if anyone got pic's of it, that would be nifty to see.

Thanks for the translation!

Unfortunately, I don't own a digital cam, nor a normal one, so I couldn't get pics of that. If I can borrow the digital one, I guess I can take shots of them at Geology Institute tomorrow (since thats where they seemed to be heading, and where the huge circles of crows usually hang out in autumn, either sitting on the roof, or flying, in, like circles.

And, yeah I'll try to translate more in english, since otherwise its unfair to you guys.

I usually don't translate boring stuff lately (or unless, I got requests in comments, or am drunk-ish and it seems relevent at the time. :)

Hey, let US be the judge of what's boring, kthx. ;-)
Стихийный Эйсид и Пиченька Судьбыxnrrn on October 15th, 2004 12:11 pm (UTC)
Ok, ok. Just see, there's this bit, about me being very lazy. I even don't write in russian often. :>
Touch of Greytouchofgrey on October 21st, 2004 11:16 am (UTC)
That's ok. Just forget about your English-speaking friends. *sniffle*

Well, Im trying not to. :P
lollydoll on October 14th, 2004 01:19 pm (UTC)
Haha! I read that "crows" as "cows" and thought you were on drugs, friend. It's so creepy when birds do that. Then, is the time to duck for cover. So many birds can only equal so many messes..
Стихийный Эйсид и Пиченька Судьбыxnrrn on October 14th, 2004 01:26 pm (UTC)
Well, in autumn, crows when they are gathering are flying very high overhead. And yes we did pass underneath in the 'danger zone'... When they are gathering they probably less likely to poop on your head though.

In any case, if I can get a digital cam tomorrow or so, I'll probably take and post pics. If not, its going to wait till the next year...

Вороны - птицы полуоседлые (также как и всякие воробьи-голуби), так вот, наши вороны чуть южнее улетают, а с севера к нам зимовать более морозоустойчивые особи прилетают. Вот так. :)
